Our coalition name is inspired by the slogan “nothing about us, without us, is for us” which was popularized by the South African Disability Rights Movement in the 1990s is now used globally for communities overcoming systemic oppression and taking control over decisions that impact their lives. Our coalition aims to bring together grassroots community leaders that are committed to organizing for equitable development, transparent PILOT agreements, and racial justice.
Segregation and uneven economic development in the city have led to significant health, housing, education, and wealth disparities between white and Black residents. Low-wage workers—largely women of color—are the backbone of Baltimore City’s economy. But they struggle to afford housing costs, childcare, elder care, and other day-to-day expenses.
To address this inequity, and to end displacement, combat poverty, and tackle systemic racism, Baltimore city must invest more community wealth building initiatives in Black neighborhoods.
